When my kids were young, and I’d mention to my mom over the phone they were cranky, she would remind me what her mom always said to her: Get outside.

And each time she told me to take the babies for a walk, I would roll my eyes slightly, and then do it.

Game

It always worked like magic.

The drama calmed. Their sour moods faded. The smiles returned.

And now they’re older, getting outside still works like a charm.

When they’re cranky or bickering or being snarky, I send them outside.

They need fresh air, they need oxygen and they need movement.

And now we’re all quarantined due to the coronavirus, and we’re all stuck indoors more than usual, we make it a point to take family walks outdoors daily… it’s our only chance to get outside of these four walls.

But walking around the block every day for the next few weeks bores even me.

So we created 9 different neighborhood walk scavenger hunts to make our family walks more fun.

Scavenger Hunts to Make Neighborhood Walks More Fun

One simple way to make the walks around our neighborhood less boring is to start looking for things around us.

We went on a rainy walk and spent the walk searching for earthworms.

And it made the walk so much more enjoyable.

So why not hunt for other things, even when the rain is gone and the earthworms are back in the soil?

I created 9 different scavenger hunts you and your kids can print out and take with you on your next family walk around the neighborhood.

It’s a perfect social distancing (while also getting fresh air) activity. And it will be fun even when the social distancing is over.

General Scavenger Hunt

Nature Scavenger Hunt

Color Scavenger Hunt- perfect for toddlers and preschoolers learning their colors or to make the scavenger hunt harder for older kids.

Shape Scavenger Hunt- we rarely pause to look at and evaluate the shape of items unless we’re specifically hunting for shapes.

ABC Scavenger Hunt- look for letters all around your neighborhood… my daughter found them etched into the concrete sidewalk.

Numbers Scavenger Hunt- numbers are everywhere. You can go on a hunt finding them.

Nighttime Scavenger Hunt-There’s no reason to only go on a scavenger hunt in the daytime. Put on pjs and have a nighttime walk. Just remember to take a flashlight with you so you can see the list.

Photo Scavenger Hunt- Hand your kiddos your phones or old cameras or even your really good camera wrapped around their necks and have them go on the photo hunt.

Make Your Own Scavenger Hunt- have your kids help you fill out a list and create your own family scavenger hunt. It can be a different one each time you create it.

5. If you want a “winner,” the person or team who wins can choose dinner or can choose dessert or can not do a chore.

The real winners though will be the moms who get their kids out of the house to shake the crabbiness out.
